North Tipperary Sports Partnership are delighted to introduce a new athletics programme for primary schools.

SPORTSHALL is a colourful, fun, indoor programme of team athletics for children. It is concerned with introducing children to athletics in a fun filled environment and developing fundamental (ABCs) foundation skills for all sports. Provision is made on the programme for inter schools and inter county team competitions.
SPORTSHALL has an underpinning philosophy of –
• Appropriate competition for children
• Learning to compete in a non stressful environment
• Avoidance of over specialisation at a young age
• Learning the merits of fair play, being part of a team and doing ones best for the teams.

There was four competitions held – 3rd & 4th class girls; 3rd & 4th class boys; 5th & 6th class girls; 5th & 6th class boys; there was no individual events. In any of the 4 competitions a participating county was represented by pupils from the same school (thus one school per county per competition category). Teams in each category were limited to 12 participants (thus the maximum per county will be 48 children for the 4 categories)

There were 12 activities in total – 6 “track” (team relay races) and 6 “field” (throw & jumps) events.

The 2013 North Tipperary Sportshall Athletics Finals were held in the Nenagh Arena on Wednesday 27th February. 4 schools participated in the 6 track and 6 field events, Lissenhall NS, Corville NS, Ballinahinch NS and Burgess NS. In its third year the success of the Sportshall Athletics movement in North Tipperary is plain to see. 180 enthusiastic children took part on the day. The excitement was palpable in the Nenagh Arena as each child eagerly cheered on their team mates and anxiously waited for their turn to take to the track or field. Teachers watched from the side lines supporting their charges and helping to ensure the smooth running of the event. Volunteers are essential for the success of such a large event and the North Tipperary Sports Partnership staff who organised the event were ably supported by volunteers from Nenagh Olympic AC, Roscrea AC, transition year students from Nenagh CBS and students from the Nenagh Vocational School Sport and Recreation PLC course. A huge thanks must be given to all those who contributed to the success of the event children, students, teachers and volunteers alike. David Rooney from the Nenagh Arena also made a huge contribution to the event providing the venue and ensuring that NTSP staff had everything that they needed.

Lissenhall NS and Corville NS now progress to the Regional Sportshall Athletics Finals in St. Flannan's College, Ennis, Co. Clare on Tuesday 12th March.

Well done to all the participating schools in this year's event.
